4 weeks + 3 days post surgery

Time flies … apparently when you aren’t even having a good time.  But, i’m ready for time to slow down now.

Please?

Soooo … at week 4 i’ve seen many of Jersey’s normal behaviors return.  He routinely greets me  when I get home each day (at the stop of the stairs, behind the gate).  He has even brought me toys/’presents’ to welcome me home.  Today he came to me whining … I got a little nervous and thought he wasn’t feeling well.  And when I got up … he got up and ran straight to his food IMG_1158bowl.  Ahhh … yes, dinner was late… and he was reminding me. Kool!
Jersey has also developed this incredibly stubborn streak… I’m not sure if he was always this stubborn, or if he’s being stubborn because he’s a little less independent than he was before surgery (I don’t let him do stairs by himself… and often times I have to push him to get him out to potty before work… and the pull him back inside after we’ve sat outside for 90mins, every morning! Ugh!). It’s been a while since i’ve allowed him to do things on his own … but he’s definitely rebelling.  It’s kool though, he only weighs 80-ish pounds = not heavy.

I have also been cooking for him, trying to incorporate veggies into his diet.  I made a super fancy beef stew a few days ago and a chicken stew too.  He slurps the sauce… but refuses to eat the vegetables.  Hmmmm … i guess you’re allowed to do this when you’re a 13 yr old rottweiler (90+ in human years).

As far as getting around, his speed, stamina, balance, ability to turn, ability to ‘squat’ have all improved tremendously.  Only time will tell if we’ve reached the maximal mobility … but he certainly gets around well enough and is ‘following me around’ like he has always done.  I have been trying to get a video of him running around for 30 seconds… this is the best I could do:

Sooo … i’m going to need to start planning our recreation for the coming weeks …

The short list:
1.) Visit his fan club in Providence, RI.
2.) Go “camping” … jersey likes to camp.  I hate bugs … but I suppose we can go somewhere for a weekend.
3.) Visit tillinghast beach … or Newport, RI beaches
4.) Visit with a few friends who have wanted to see him again.
5.) Make a suggestion ????

I am also baby sitting 2 dogs… we’ll call them “Devil Dog Jr.” and “Devil Dog II” (Emerson is the original “Devil Dog”)

Awwww….this update must warms my heart! To near that Jersey is doing some of his “normal” routines…greeting you…following you around…so sweet

It seemed to be about the five week mark that my Happy Hannah started greeting me at the door with a big ole’ WOO WOOOOOO!

I love that he spends 99 minutes with you outside and doesn’t want to come back in! What a special time to just practice being in the moment…smeeling the scents of summer, listening to the birds, just enjoying the time together out in nature!

Jersey is clearly very, very loved! And he’s certainly enjoying the spoiling! Yeah, you’re right, at ninety yrs. young, if he doesn’t want to eat his veggies, he doesn’t have to!

Btw, Devil Dog Jr. And Deveil Dog II are adorable!!

I think you summer plans for Jersey are splendid!! You must take lots and lots of pictures! The only suggestion I would offer would be to got through a lot of drive thrus for burgers snd ice cream cones. If you have a Starbucks near you, go to the drive thru with Jersey and get a Puppy Latte (whip cream)! He’ll love it! I take Merry Myrtle every Tuesday for one.

HAPPY ONE MONTH AMPUVERSARY JERSEY!!! Keep em coming handsome boy!!

Ice cream and cake to celebrate!!

Love to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Oh lordy you’ve got your paws full with those little pups and Jersey! What a good boy he is for letting them stay in his crib.

He really is looking GREAT! As for the stubbornness, many folks report this and I think some of it has to do with our willingness to let Tripawds do whatever they want because we take pity on them and slack off on our pawrental duties. Of course, they’ve earned the slack, but dogs also love boundaries and leadership, so it’s a fine line we gotta walk. Try not to get too laid-back, I’ll bet he’s the kind of pup who will take a mile when you give him an inch. Love that boy!

Oh, a suggestion for your summer…you forgot ice cream! A trip to an ice cream pawlor would be really fun.

The other devil dogs are at the respective homes now!

Yes, i’m working on getting things back to as-normal-as-possible. He has been spoiled by my ad thoroughly spoiled by his grandma (my mom). But we’re working on making the house a bit safer for him (more throw rugs) and not giving into his demands unless he truly needs help.

At this point… we know that he is bark/growly about needing help going upstairs (he can go downstairs by himself now.. but he is still nervous about going up the stairs)… sometimes he wants us to bring his water bowl to him (.. my mom and sister STILL bring him his bowl, even though i’ve asked them not to! *sigh*), when his fan isn’t pointing in the right direction, when he wants his bed moved (he likes to lay directly beside the human bed/underfoot at the couch)…. and when he wants to go outside…. and yes, it’s taken me a WHILE to compile a list of his demands! lol! But, i’ve got Mr. Jersey all figured out now!

Jersey is super food-temperature sensitive and doesn’t tolerate cold foods (ie. ice cream) really well… but I think I can give him a taste of some ice cream, because he loves it!!

For 4 weeks out and 13 yo Jersey looks like he is moving great! I bet he looks even better when he is moving faster, running is easier than walking for rear leg tripawds. As Sally would say, he definitely has got his sparkle back. Woohoo! Does Jersey like to swim? That would be a fun thing to do too 🙂

Jersey loves water (except bath-time water)… but he only splashes around. I’ve seem him jump into a “stream” that was much deeper than expected… and he swam… but I don’t think he LIKES to swim. lol!
